Lake Land College accepting Student Ambassador applications Posted on July 25, 2017 There is a great opportunity available for students attending Lake Land College for the 2017-2018 school year. Meet new friends, gain leadership skills, build your resume and earn a scholarship by becoming a Lake Land College Student Ambassador! Student Ambassador applications are now being accepted for the upcoming school year. As an Ambassador, students are selected to serve as official college representatives at events such as college fairs and high school visits. In addition, Ambassadors conduct campus tours and assist with special functions sponsored by the college. “Being a Student Ambassador is a challenging job, but it is a prestigious organization to join,” said Lisa Shumard-Shelton, director of new student admissions. “Our Ambassadors gain invaluable leadership skills and have a lot of fun at the same time.” As a Student Ambassador, each student will receive official Lake Land College Student Ambassador apparel and get to take part in specific trainings and special activities, exclusively for the team members. Ambassadors who complete requirements will receive a $500 scholarship from Lake Land College for their year of service. Requirements include: participating in training sessions; attending regularly scheduled weekly meetings; serving as an official representative of Lake Land College at career fairs, high school visits and other events that involve student recruitment; conducting campus tours; assisting with student registration during the fall and spring semesters; participating in telephone and letter writing campaigns; and completing at least 10 credits of activities each semester. Eligibility to become a Student Ambassador requires that: Students must be enrolled on campus at least half-time for both the fall and spring semesters during the year of application. Applicants must have a Lake Land College cumulative GPA of at least 2.50 as calculated by the college. Lake Land College accepts nominations for Distinguished Alumni Society Posted on July 24, 2017 The Lake Land College Alumni organization is accepting nominations for the 2017 inductees who will join the select group of 83 members in the Distinguished Alumni Society. Last year’s inductees include Mathew Cekander, Laker Nation Class of 1999, of Effingham; Kerry Fearn, Laker Nation Class of 1989, of Charleston; Renee Fonner, Laker Nation Class of 1990, of Hindsboro; Craig Greeson, Laker Nation Class of 1988, of Hanover Park; and Kristopher VanSickle, Laker Nation Class of 2007, of Woodstock, Ga. “We encourage you to nominate an alumnus to be recognized this year,” said Dave Cox, director of alumni relations and annual giving. “There are so many success stories of our alumni that we simply are not aware of and it’s very gratifying to hear those stories and be able to recognize those former students who have made a substantial impact in their field and/or their community.” To submit a nomination, please visit lakelandcollege.edu/alumni and look for the Award Nominations tab under Resources on the left. MAP Grant Funding available to Lake Land College students Posted on July 19, 2017 The recently passed Illinois state budget means Lake Land College students who qualified for financial aid from the state will receive it for the 2017-2018 school year. This form of financial aid is called the MAP grant and it does not have to be repaid. To help students who are making higher education decisions for fall 2017, the college is applying MAP grants to accounts for students who qualify. Students can check their MAP grant status by logging into their Laker Hub account and selecting “Financial Aid” under the IRIS menu on the left and then “Award Letter.” While in the Laker Hub, students can register for New Student Orientation or call 217-234-5301. For many students, a MAP grant combined with a Pell grant, both of which do not have to be repaid, will cover all tuition and fees for Lake Land College for the year. Tuition and fees for one year are about $3,900, nearly a fourth of tuition and fees at the average state university. Lake Land College assures students who qualify will receive the MAP grant financial aid for the fall 2017 semester, which starts August 21. There is plenty of time for new students to get started! Opportunity for Lake Land College students to qualify for financial assistance Posted on July 17, 2017 Lake Land College students who are enrolled for fall 2017 in a Workforce Ready program may be eligible to receive additional financial assistance in addition to their Pell and MAP grants if their program is approved through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act and they meet eligibility requirements for WIOA funding. Students are encouraged to visit with a C.E.F.S. representative at the Lake Land College Kluthe Center on Wednesday, July 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to see if they qualify. Additional financial assistance may include tuition, fees, and required items such as uniforms, tools, supplies, transportation and child care assistance. This assistance would be in addition to any financial aid, such as Pell and MAP grants, or scholarships a student may already be receiving. Approved Workforce Ready programs are those that prepare a student for an immediate career upon graduation. These programs include many certificate and degree programs at Lake Land College. Some examples of programs are Nursing, Physical Therapy Assistant, CNA, Dental Hygiene, and many more. The major must be approved by WIOA as an Occupational Skills Training program. C.E.F.S., the WIOA Services Provider, will meet with students in a private, brief meeting to determine eligibility and verify the student is enrolled in a WIOA approved program. Lake Land students who are unable to attend this day can contact the Effingham C.E.F.S. office at 217-342-4382 (use extensions 226, 227 or 228). Students must be registered for the Fall Semester at Lake Land College to receive benefits before the semester begins on August 21. Students who register after the semester begins will have to wait until the next semester to receive any benefits. A Lake Land College academic counselor will also be on hand at the Kluthe Center during this same time to advise potential students who would like to register for fall. Lake Land College to offer free English Language Acquisition classes Posted on July 13, 2017 Lake Land College Adult Education is offering free English Language Acquisition classes beginning in August. In Effingham, the class will meet at the Lake Land College Kluthe Center, 1204 Network Centre Blvd. Classes begin August 21 and will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. In Mattoon, classes will be held at the Lake Land College Workforce Development Center, 305 Richmond Ave E. Classes begin August 21 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon. In Arthur, classes will be held at Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond High School, 301 E. Lake Land College Adult Ed offers free BNA classes Posted on July 11, 2017 Lake Land College’s Adult Education is offering free Basic Nursing Assistant (BNA) training in the fall semester in Marshall and Pana. Orientation for the training is scheduled for the first day of class at the following locations: MARSHALL – Eastern Region Center, 224 S. 6th St., August 7, 9 a.m. PANA – Western Region Center, 600 E. 1st. St., August 7, 5 p.m. The eight-credit-hour BNA course is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). This program provides instruction in basic nursing skills in theory, laboratory, and clinical settings including basic anatomy, medical terminology, communication skills, safety, infection control and patient rights. Upon completion of the BNA training, graduates of the program are eligible to take the state certification exam to become a certified nursing assistant (CNA). CNAs provide basic care for patients in hospitals and residents of long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes. Employment of CNAs projected to grow 21 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. Because of the growing elderly population, many CNAs will be needed in long-term care facilities, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
