Lake Land College introduces new medical assistant completion program

Posted on September 30, 2021

Lake Land College recently introduced a medical assistant completion program for those who have a Certified Medical Assistant certificate from somewhere other than Lake Land College and would like to earn an associate degree as a medical assistant.

“This is a great opportunity for people already working in this field to advance their careers,” Medical Assistant Program Instructor and Director of the Medical Assistant Program Molly Yeske said.

The program offers students the opportunity to earn an associate degree as a medical assistant based upon qualifications they have already earned elsewhere. As a current student in the program, Rhonda Lambes said she was extremely grateful for the opportunity to further her professional training.

“I knew right away that this scenario was about as perfect as it gets,” Lambes said. “I knew I had to do this for myself.”

Another student, Jami Duffy, said she decided to enroll in the program for her own personal gain as well as to inspire her employees. Duffy recently took on an administrative position in her workplace, and she said she felt compelled to lead her employees by example.

“It says a lot about someone’s dedication to their employer and employment when they are willing to invest in their education,” Duffy said.

Not only are graduates of the program more likely to have a broader range of employment opportunities, they can also become more well-versed and marketable with their abilities and even earn pay or position raises in some situations.

For more information about how to get involved in the program, contact Yeske at 217-234-5055 or myeske@lakelandcollege.edu.

Your input is valuable in our next strategic plan

Posted on September 28, 2021

How can Lake Land College serve you? That question serves as the foundation for a year-long process the Lake Land College Strategic Planning Committee announced in early September.

To kick off the process, the committee published a comprehensive Trend Analysis Report that provides key takeaways from research on state, national and global trends affecting higher education as well as demographic data for the Lake Land College district and the diverse communities it serves. The report and Executive Summary are published on the college’s website at lakelandcollege.edu/creating-our-future.

As a community college, Lake Land serves all or parts of 15 counties and 31 school districts as district #517. It is the second largest geographical district in the state and is about the same size as the state of Connecticut.

Led by Lake Land College Chief of Staff Jean Anne Grunloh, the strategic planning committee’s work in fiscal year 2022 will set the stage for the next four-year planning cycle, fiscal years 2023-2026. The college’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30.

“Lake Land College is excited to plan for the future and create a strategic plan that serves our next generation of students,” Grunloh said. “To accomplish this, we will be implementing a process that is deliberately inclusive of our internal and external stakeholders including community members, students and staff.”

Lake Land is inviting all community members, students and staff to complete a brief five-minute survey to assist in the process of identifying the goals and objectives for the next strategic plan. The five-minute survey is available at lakelandcollege.edu under the About Us menu/About Us Links/Strategic Plan.

“Our goal is to develop an innovative and adaptive strategic plan that addresses local, state, national and global trends impacting higher education and positions Lake Land to meet the student and workforce needs in a post-pandemic environment,” Lake Land College President Josh Bullock said. “To accomplish this goal, we need to hear from community members, business leaders, alumni, current students and future Lakers.”

Lake Land College to host first annual Math & Science Open House

Posted on September 8, 2021

Lake Land College math and science faculty will host the first annual Math & Science Open House from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 24. The event allows high school juniors and seniors to learn more and ask questions about Lake Land math and science academic programs such as chemistry, biology, physics, math and engineering.

Tours of facilities and labs will allow those interested to see and experience the state-of-the-art technology and equipment available to students in these programs. As part of the biology lab tour, participants will also have the opportunity to view a cadaver.

“We are fortunate to have labs furnished with up-to-date equipment that go a long way in preparing our students to be successful when they graduate or transfer,” Division Chair of Math & Science/Biological Science Instructor Ikemefuna Nwosu said. “Our hope is that when students and their parents or guardians visit the open house, they can get a hands-on perspective of the quality education they will receive at Lake Land College.”

The event will consist of three sessions based on different aspects of the math and science programs at Lake Land. The first session will include information about geographic information systems (GIS). GIS links data and descriptions to specific locations, allowing users to connect patterns and context within that data.

The second session will include information about biological science, and the third session will involve physical science. As part of these sessions, faculty will be presenting hands-on demonstrations showcasing equipment, animal specimens, cadavers and laboratory experiments that are part of the Laker experience that provides students an advantage when transitioning to the workforce or to four-year universities.

Lake Land College to host Career Day

Posted on August 19, 2021

Lake Land College will host its annual Career Day on Tuesday, October 5. At Career Day, nearly 1,200 high school juniors and seniors come to Lake Land to learn about a variety of careers and how to follow a path to attain those careers.

High school students throughout the district will have the opportunity to register for more than 175 different sessions in an array of fields including agriculture, health care, business, information technology, cosmetology, humanities and arts, communications, math, science, engineering, education, criminal justice, human services, psychology, sociology, political science, history, automotive, construction, technology, leadership, success in college and more.

Sessions will be either 20 or 50 minutes in length, allowing students to explore topics at a basic or in-depth level of the particular field.

“This event is a great way for high school students to explore the options available to them,” Michelle Zumbahlen, coordinator for strategic student communication & initiatives, said. “The attendees have the chance to learn and ask questions about areas of study, career paths and colleges that can help guide their decision-making process in the future.”

An Illinois Regional College Fair will also be held as a part of Career Day. Representatives from approximately 50 different colleges around the country will be on hand to speak with students about what their colleges have to offer.

The college fair will allow students to interact with many different colleges at one time, a unique opportunity that they may not experience elsewhere.

Students may attend the College Fair before or after their scheduled sessions or register to attend the College Fair as one of their sessions if they wish to have more time to explore this component of the day.

Masks covering the nose and mouth will be required for all individuals at all times while inside campus buildings, regardless of vaccination status. While outdoors, vaccinated individuals may remove their masks, while unvaccinated individuals should wear a mask when social distancing cannot be maintained.

To support compliance with indoor mask requirements, food or drink will not be allowed at college events or gatherings held on campus or in college facilities.

For more information about Career Day, visit lakelandcollege.edu/career-day or contact Zumbahlen at mzumbahlen4077@lakelandcollege.edu or 217-234-5230.

Lake Land College receives Compeer Financial grant

Posted on August 4, 2021

The Lake Land College Foundation and Ag Division recently received a $75,000 grant from Compeer Financial. Lake Land College is one of six community colleges in Illinois receiving these grant dollars, and one of 14 community colleges overall.

Pictured are (left to right): Scholarship Coordinator Hannah Crnkovich, Executive Director for College Advancement Christina Donsbach, Lake Land College President Josh Bullock, Senior Corporate Giving Specialist for Compeer Financial Fund for Rural America Karen Schieler, Division Chair Agriculture/Agriculture Instructor Ryan Orrick, Agriculture Business Instructor Ryan Wildman and Horticulture Instructor Dyke Barkley.

“We are very excited for this opportunity and thankful for the support from Compeer Financial,” said Division Chair of Agriculture/Agriculture Instructor Ryan Orrick. “We are really looking forward to seeing how this will impact our students, division and the college.”

The Agriculture and Rural Initiative, Compeer Financial’s donor advised fund, has granted $825,000 to community and technical colleges across the cooperative’s 144-county territory.

The colleges were selected as partners based on their agricultural education offerings, agriculture workforce development and geographic impact.

“The opportunities Lake Land College offers to ag students are priceless,” Karen Schieler, Senior Corporate Giving Specialist for Compeer Financial Fund for Rural America, said. “Getting students and youth interested in agriculture careers and helping to develop that workforce is what we strive to do, and Lake Land provides valuable, hands-on experience in many of those areas.”

The Agriculture and Rural Initiative was created by the Compeer Financial Board of Directors in 2019 to make signature investments in programs and projects that directly address the needs of farmers and others who work in agriculture.

“Community and Technical colleges provide one-of-a-kind educational opportunities, which are focused on the needs and careers in those communities,” said Greg Nelsona Compeer Financial Director. “These grants are part of Compeer’s commitment to champion rural, by supporting our clients and communities, creating sustainable and long-term success in the industry.”

Based in the Upper Midwest, Compeer Financial is a member-owned Farm Credit cooperative serving and supporting agriculture and rural communities. The $25.4 billion organization provides loans, leases, risk management and other financial services throughout 144 counties in Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Lake Land College extends gratitude to Compeer Financial for providing this grant and will continue to explore the opportunities it provides to help students succeed.

Lake Land College updates pandemic safety protocols

Posted on August 3, 2021

In accordance with new guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), Lake Land College’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Team will be implementing new pandemic response safety protocols to protect the college community.

“Since announcing our return to a more traditional campus environment and in-person class offerings for the fall, the college has been closely monitoring the rapid spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant and guidelines issued by the CDC and IDPH. Knowing that a majority of the counties in our college district are at CDC’s “Substantial” or “High” risk levels for community transmission, we are taking these measures to ensure a safe and effective learning environment,” Lake Land College President Josh Bullock said.

Effective August 4, masks covering the nose and mouth will be required for all individuals at all times while inside campus buildings, regardless of vaccination status. Masks can be removed when alone in an enclosed room with the door shut or in a designated eating area on campus.

All plans for in-person services, classes, events and meetings will continue as planned, maintaining social distancing whenever feasible while indoors. For the fall semester, students can select from in-person, virtual and online courses to build a schedule that best suits their needs.

Employees, students and visitors coming to a college facility are encouraged to self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms prior to visiting campus and to refrain from visiting if feeling ill.

Pandemic safety protocols are subject to change with direction provided by the CDC, Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB), the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) and the Governor’s Office. Lake Land College will provide updates as relevant information becomes available.
