Ever wonder how Google Maps works? GIS, or Geospatial Technology, is the foundation for Google Maps and thousands of other applications you encounter every day. In this short-term program, you’ll learn how to gather data and connect it to maps to create an illustration of the physical world around us.
Students who graduate with a GIS certificate are highly marketable in a variety of public service and private entities in the fields of archaeology, geology, waste management, natural resources management, asset management, aviation and banking.
GIS is a system that creates, manages, analyzes and maps all types of data. GIS connects data to a map, integrating where things are with tags that tell a person what things look like at that exact location. With this skill, you can help users understands patters, relationships and geographic context.
“I have a soft spot for community college, because I’m not sure if I would have gone into higher education if it weren’t for community college. I had a great experience at one, so I knew that was important to me on my pathway. I’ve been here more than 25 years now, and it’s been a lot of fun working with the students and staff I’ve had the opportunity to work with.” Dr. Mike Rudibaugh Division Chair Math & Science/Geography/Earth Science Instructor Board of Directors at Illinois GIS Association (ILGISA) 2018 Hilton Distinguished Collaboration Award Recipient

The GIS Internship includes an internship and opportunities to explore independent interests that provide you with real-world experience that is highly valued in the workplace.
As a GIS student, you will use state-of-the-art hand-held GPS devices to collect data and the latest mapping software available in the field.
Students in this class have created real-world applications that are used by local industry. They created a wine trail map series for the East Central Illinois Development Corporation; collected data for EJ Water Cooperative in Dieterich; and worked with Coles-Moultrie Electrical Cooperative technicians to map an estimated 43,000 utility poles in the cooperative’s 1,900-mile district.
GIS is not a Special Admission Program. If it were it would have a checklist with it. We would provide links such as these:
Download the ADN checklist for the complete application procedure. Nursing Program Mission Download the ADN Checklist—PCCS if you are an high school student in Health Occupations class or plan to pursue this class Reactivation request/course waiver Download the LPN-RN Checklist if you are currently an LPN

Students who earn a GIS certificate in addition to an associate degree or bachelor’s degree are highly marketable. The Geospatial Technology and the Surveying with GIS programs are excellent complements to those pursuing a degree in Earth Science.
This program does not have any additional costs besides the tuition and fees and course fees.
If it did, we would list them here.
