Lake Land College Land Acknowledgement

“As an institution, we acknowledge that we are on the homelands of many Native peoples including but not limited to the following tribes:

  • Yankton Sioux Tribe of South Dakota
  • Alexis Nakota Sioux Tribe of Alberta Canada
  • Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Minnesota
  • Prairie Island Indian Community of Minnesota
  • Ogala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota
  • Lower Brule Sioux Tribe of South Dakota
  • Standing Rock Sioux Tribe of South and North Dakota
  • Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribe of South Dakota
  • Fort Peck Tribe of Montana
  • Rosebud Sioux Tribe of South Dakota
  • Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe of South Dakota
  • Kickapoo Tribe of Texas
  • Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma
  • Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas
  • Peoria Tribe of Oklahoma
  • Miami Tribe of Oklahoma

These tribes along with any unnamed peoples who are indigenous to the land we now occupy lived in this region for thousands of years, and their sovereign nations pre-date the United States. These peoples had thriving and vibrant communities prior to colonization by settlers. While many Native peoples agreed to cede lands in return for goods and services, the government did not uphold the terms of these treaties, leading to widespread devastation. Others did not cede these lands and thus were removed against their will.

We recognize this painful past, and we honor the tribes who resided on this land, as well as their sacrifices and their continued contributions to our region and nation today.

In acknowledging the atrocities committed against these groups and with respect to those whose land we now occupy, we pledge not only to continue to spread awareness of these injustices, but to actively seek ways to walk with these and other tribal groups in their life journeys.

We pledge to assist Native individuals from these and other tribes seeking higher education at this institution, and we pledge to respect and appreciate the culture, beliefs and practices of the individuals at Lake Land College and beyond.

We are committed to frequently revising, improving and strengthening this acknowledgement and plan of action as we continue to conduct research and receive feedback from people in Native tribes and communities.”
