Pride Month

Pride Month as we know it today, can have different meanings for different people. For some it is a remembrance, for others it is a celebration, and for still more people it is a call to action.

Pride began as a riot at the Stonewall Inn Club where many LGBTQIA+ clubgoers experienced a police raid in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969. However, these individuals stood their ground and refused to be removed from the premises. This is largely viewed as the spark that lit the fire of the Gay Rights movement, ultimately leading to the first Pride parade in New York City on June 28, 1970 – the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riot.

While great strides have been taken towards equitable and inclusive experiences for the LGBTQIA+ community, many of these individuals are still denied basic human rights, are harassed, bullied, physically assaulted, and some are even murdered simply for living as their authentic selves.
